JOB TITLE: Specialist-GT (Elementary)
REPORTS TO: Director-Advanced Academics
WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Gifted/Talented Specialist is responsible for building the capacity of gifted and talented teachers by providing leadership and professional development in order to maintain the goals and documentation of the program.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university
- Minimum 30 hours training in the field of gifted education
- Three years experience working directly with elementary gifted and talented students
Preferred:
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Valid Texas teacher certification
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- Strong communication, public relation and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of strategies to promote higher order thinking, creativity, and research skills
- Knowledge of differentiation of curriculum and characteristics of gifted individuals
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Participate in overall planning related to the gifted and talented program.
- Write differentiated and problem-based curriculum for elementary grade students and furnish new additions/insertions as needed.
- Articulate the importance of gifted education to a variety of individuals.
- Provide informative meetings for parents of gifted children.
- Establish and maintain relationships with other professionals who service the gifted outside of the district.
- Communicate program information, student progress, and assessment data to campus leaders and/or parents.
- Assist teachers in creating and implementing differentiated curriculum for advanced students.
- Plan and provide gifted/talented program staff development.
- Plan and implement field experiences for students.
- Maintain program records for all elementary campuses
- Confer with principals and district leadership concerning the screening and selection of gifted and talented students.
- Clarify information and scores regarding testing for parents, teachers, and administrators.
- Conduct evaluations of the program.
- Compile results of the program evaluation for distribution to the Senior Leadership Team and principals.
- Maintain program confidentiality unless disclosure is required by law.
- Comply with policies, operating procedures, and requirements for TEA, District and campus policies and procedures.
- Organize and manage large scale events such as the G/T Expo, A+ UIL, etc.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment. May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical.
