JOB TITLE: Driver Trainee

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
A Driver Trainee is responsible for participating in the Spring ISD behind the wheel training program to include skills performance and observation to obtain the skills and techniques necessary to successfully pass the Texas Department of Public Safety skills tests required to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and School Bus endorsements.

QUALIFICATIONS:
The Driver Trainee position is subject to the following limitations:
- Trainee must complete training and be prepared for skills test within 20 business days from first training session.
- Trainee will be permitted a maximum of two (2) attempts to successful pass each of the three required skills tests: Vehicle Inspection, Basic Control, and Road Test.
- Skills testing will be conducted either by the Texas Department of Public Safety or by Spring ISD through the Texas Department of Public Safety Third Party Skills Testing program.
Required:
- High School graduate or GED from an accredited institution
- 18 Years of Age
- Two Years of experience as a licensed driver
- Acceptable driving record and criminal history
- Valid state of Texas Class C (or higher) driver license
- Valid state of Texas Class B Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) with Passenger and School Bus endorsements
- Pass a pre-employment Texas School Bus Driver physical exam and pre-employment drug test
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- Possess mental maturity and emotional stability to operate a school bus safely despite distractions from traffic and passengers
- Interest in working with children and young adults
- Must have the ability to communicate both written and orally in English for safety reasons
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Participate in the Spring ISD behind the wheel training program to include skills performance and observation to obtain the skills and techniques necessary to successfully pass the Texas Department of Public Safety skills tests required to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and School Bus endorsements
- Pre-trip vehicle inspection to include under-hood, interior, and exterior inspections
- Basic vehicle control maneuvers: backing, turning, parking
- Specialized maneuvers: railroad crossings, student loading, roadside stops, freeway driving
- Exhibit care and safety when performing all assigned and directed tasks
- Complete training and be prepared for skills testing within 20 business days from first training session
- Successfully pass in two attempts or fewer each of the three skills tests required to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License: Vehicle Inspection, Basic Control, and Road Test.
- Ride on routes as assigned and observe techniques used by the bus driver for vehicle operation and control, student management, and emergency procedures
- Assist the driver with student management and safety while observing routes.
- Assist driver with loading and unloading students as necessary
- Be able to assist with performing emergency bus evacuation of students on bus including walking to the rear of bus, exiting the rear door, and/or lifting students in emergency situation.
- Assist driver with maintaining cleanliness of bus interior.
- Administer basic first aid as trained when necessary.
- Be responsible for being at work on time every day.
- Communicate clearly with students, coworkers, and supervisors.
- Perform all other duties as assigned
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, prolonged sitting, repetitive hand and arm motions, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. This position will also require traveling within the district. Mental demands: Maintain emotional control, ability to effectively communicate in both oral and written in English for safety reasons. Environmental Conditions: Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperature (hot and cold) and vehicle fumes.
