JOB TITLE: Library Media Specialist K-8
REPORTS TO: Campus Principal WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt PAY GRADE: Teacher Salary Scale
PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Library Media Specialist K-8 collaborates with teaching staff in the development of student information literacy through the administration of the library media program, provides specialized instruction to students and teaching staff, and oversees the selection, organization, utilization, and maintenance of library, information and curriculum resources, in an effort to increase student academic performance. All employees of SISD are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals, communicate in a clear and respectful manner, championing the needs of our students and drive continuous improvement. QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Two years’ successful experience as a teacher
- Experience teaching, modeling, and coaching educational technology for both students and staff.
- Valid Texas teaching certification
Preferred:
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with emphasis in library resources, informational/media or comparable program
- Library media specialist experience
- Experience in K-12 educational research
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Strong organizational, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills
- Expertise in using technology in instruction and has demonstrated that through effective lessons such as those in TechFusion
- Experienced in leading engaging staff development sessions
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Learning and Teaching
- Fosters the development of information finding, analyzing and problem-solving skills to support investigations and encouraging students to become skilled creators of information and ideas.
Reading Advocacy
- Promotes a love of reading culture among students and staff; maintains a library culture that encourages reading for pleasure and professional growth; supports school reading incentive programs, provides book talks and reads consultations for students and staff.
Information Access and Delivery
- Collaborates with and provides instruction for students in the preparation, presentation, and evaluation of units or assignments that utilize instructional technology and information resources.
- Assists staff and students in using knowledge meaningfully for decision making and problem solving.
- Provides instruction for students and staff.
- Assists staff and students with strategies for intellectual access to information and ideas for learning (finding, judging, and using information) that they can use within and beyond school settings.
- Provides information and instruction in areas of information literacy, the Research Cycle, Acceptable Use Policy, internet safety, ethics, intellectual property and copyright, and use of educational technologies.
- Promotes the integrated use of technology as a learning tool; and creates and maintains the campus library website.
- Promotes innovation, creativity and individual choice through the selection and use of resources in the Library.
- Cultivates, promotes, manages and maintains a Maker Space for all students to use.
- Program Administration/Management
- Establishes and coordinates efficient systems to enhance the use of information resources.
- reates and implements procedures for library media center operations including, but not limited to: planning and evaluation, budgeting, access, student and teacher use, instruction, services, facilities, and collection development (selection, acquisition, cataloging, processing, inventory, weeding).
- Develops and maintains a diversified library collection of print, non-print, and electronic resources to support curricular needs, the development of student literacy, and the interests of the students, using up-to-date review sources and selection practices.
- Maintains circulation systems for library, processional, and curriculum materials.
- Creates an environment and implements systems to promote intellectual and physical access to library media materials and equipment.
- Schedules the library media facilities for instruction and supervises students.
- Leadership/Collaboration
- Provides leadership, instruction, and consulting assistance in the use of literature, leading edge instruction and information technology.
- Models instructional strategies and coaches staff members in the integration of instructional technology.
- Participates as a learner and teacher in district wide meetings, in-service, and committees.
- Partners with Campus Instructional Technology Specialists to provide campus professional development, coaching and modeling for instructional technology.
- Complies with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local board in the area of library services.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following Physical demands: physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. This position will also require both traveling within the district. Mental demands: Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data; ability to interpret TEC and policy; ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory, ability to be effective in both oral and written communication; ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
